• Sam Camut, a Cannon School graduate, received a four-year $150,000 U.S. Marine Corps. NROTC scholarship to Marquette University in Wisconsin. He plans to major in economic and political science and, after graduation, will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Sam is the son of Ken and Beverly Camut, of Huntersville.
• Andrew Golba, a rising senior at Hough High School, attended a 10-day National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine June 19 to 28 in Chapel Hill. He was nominated by his teachers and was selected based on academic excellence, leadership potential and interest in a career in medicine. Andrew was one of 300 young scholars chosen to attend the forum. In addition to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Medical School, participants also visited Duke University Medical Center and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
• Kohl’s Department Stores recognized three young north Mecklenburg County volunteers, along with 2,200 youth volunteers nationwide, for positively affecting their communities. Winners receive a $50 Kohl’s gift card and qualify for a $1,000 regional scholarship for post-secondary education, which Kohl’s will award in July. Of the more than 200 regional winners, 10 national winners will receive $10,000 in scholarships and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf. Local winners are Laurel Madison Cannon, 9, of Cornelius; Alexa Haas, 17, of Huntersville; and Jordan Mitzel, 12, of Huntersville.
