CORNELIUS – County officials have lifted a swimming advisory issued June 23 for a single cove on Lake Norman after a spill of about 265 gallons of sewage.

The advisory applied only to the cove adjacent to Town Harbour Road in Cornelius, and lab results show bacteria counts have returned to normal levels that are safe for swimming.

Officials issued the warning after a broken value on a sewer line on Windy Point Drive at Town Harbour Road led to the discharge June 21. A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities crew stopped the spill and repaired the  sewer line.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff collected water samples Friday, June 24, and lab tests showed fecal coliform bacteria at 13 colonies per 100 milliliters, well below the 200 colonies-per-100 milliliters considered safe for swimming.
