CORNELIUS – In the days following the May 22 tornados that killed more than 140 people in Joplin, Mo., Cornelius Elementary School students have worked to bring a bit of hope to the devastated town.

During music classes, students made “cards of hope,” the character education trait for May, to send to Joplin residents. Each student also brought in small stuffed animals to deliver with their cards. Some students also brought extra stuffed animals to share with students who didn’t a toy to send. The stuffed animals will be pinned to each card and boxed and shipped to Joplin, with parents providing funds for postage.

Cassidee Cramblette, a fourth-grader who donated her favorite beanie baby, a bunny named Brownie, made a card that read, “Love is sent to you. Let God be with you. I am sending my most prized treasure. You need it more than me. Love is the only thing you need in life, and we’re sending you just that.”
