On May 3, former Hopewell High School boys basketball player Jordan Downing made a commitment to transfer to Presbyterian College. Downing leaves for the Clinton, S.C., school after playing his freshman season at Davidson College.
“He had several offers, and it came down to Holy Cross and Presbyterian,” Downing’s father, Keith, told The Herald Weekly via e-mail. “He decided to stay closer to home.”
On March 9, the 6-foot-5, 195-pound Downing informed Davidson coach Bob McKillop that he planned to transfer after questioning his role with the team. Downing played in 29 games last season and averaged 3.2 points and 1.3 rebounds in 9.1 minutes per contest.
At Hopewell, Downing was a three-time all-conference selection and was named all-region after the 2008-09 season. He played four varsity seasons for the Titans. As a senior, Downing averaged 18.1 points, five rebounds and three assists. According to Davidson’s athletics website, Downing owns Hopewell’s career scoring record, and his teams won 96 games during his four seasons.
