In his first season of high school tennis, Hough freshman Ryan Wydra won every conference match as the Huskies’ No. 1 seed. Now he’s the 2011 I-MECK 4A conference’s Boys Tennis Player of the Year.
Wydra also won the conference singles tournament, advancing to the Class 4A Western Regional individual tournament.
Hopewell collected four all-conference nods, with Brian Andersen, John Armato, John David Curlis and Tyler Roberts being chosen.
Roberts and Armato won the conference doubles title and were two of 12 players named to the N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association’s 2011 Western 4A All-Region Men’s Tennis Team after advancing to the state tournament. Hopewell coach Craig Smith is the league’s Coach of the Year.
Also named to the I-MECK all-conference squad were Collin Black (Hough), Garrett Mrzlak (North Mecklenburg), Matt Crisp (Lake Norman), Hamitt Coody (Lake Norman), Shravan Rajan (Lake Norman), Jake Combs (Mooresville), Michael Telford (Mooresville) and Marquis Duncan (Vance).
