SOUTHERN PINES – A Huntersville 12-year-old won two awards as part of the N.C. Poetry Society’s annual Pinesong Awards contest.
Sydney Metcalf, a daughter of Kevin and Evelyn Metcalf, of Huntersville, placed second for the Joan Scott Memorial Award for her poem “The Watcher” and an honorable mention for the Mary Chilton Award for her poem “Dreams.” The Joan Scott Memorial Award was open to third- through eighth-graders for poems about the environment, while the Mary Chilton Award was open to sixth- through eighth-graders.
Sydney is a seventh-grader at Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy. She will attend the Pinesong Awards ceremony on Saturday, May 21, in Southern Pines, where she will read her poems and receive her awards.
