DAVIDSON – The youth of Davidson United Methodist Church are holding a Parents’ Night Out fundraiser Saturday, May 21, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. for infants through fifth graders at the church, 233 S. Main St.

Proceeds support the youth mission trip to Costa Rica this summer. Suggested donations are $20 for one child, $30 for two and $35 for three or more. Add an additional $3 for a pizza supper. Parents should email Susan Cavasinni at scavasinni@davidsonumc.org with the child’s name and their contact information if they want the youth group to babysit.

The youth also need new or gently used pillowcases and double-bias tape to make dresses to take to an orphanage in Costa Rica. Drop items in the church office.

The church has committed to spend $309,500 in missions within 30 miles of Davidson this year. Most of those missions “have something to do with poverty and its effect on people,” according to the church newsletter, and the Rev. Jeff Hassel has started a program at Mooresville Christian Mission called “Bridges Over Poverty.”

The first meetings took place May 10, and those who want more information should contact the mission’s Volunteer Coordinator Suzanne Dewosky at 704-664-2357, ext. 50, or volunteer@ourchristianmission.org.

Other groups are collecting items for different missions:

• The Habitat for Humanity Team is collected old cell phones as a fundraiser to help build two Habitat homes this year. Take donations to the Connect Center.

• Others are collecting cereal, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce or canned tomatoes, cake mixes and frosting, instant potatoes, soup, dog and cat food and hygiene items for the Loaves and Fishes pantry. Bring items to the church office.
