On May 5, the SouthLake baseball team completed a sweep of the Metrolina Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships with a 5-3 victory over Matthews Covenant Day in the MAC finals at Gaston Christian School. The Eagles’ Jared Fortune pitched a complete game giving up only three runs on five hits for his seventh win of the season. Palmer Coleman led the way offensively with a two-run home run and Travis Hallman knocked in two runs. SouthLake improved to 23-4-1 on the season and won its second consecutive MAC championship.
On May 11, the Eagles found out their seeding and opponent for the first round of the NCISAA 2A state tournament. SouthLake coach Rich Landis said that his team had the option to play that game at home on either Friday, May 13 or Saturday, May 14, but will play that game at Gaston Christian to take advantage of the field’s more traditional outfield wall distance. The Eagles home field is shorter than most schools at the 2A level.
