Man accused in Cornelius kidnapping case pleads guilty
A Mexican man pleaded guilty this week to conspiring to kidnap two Cornelius girls at a school bus stop last year.
Ruben Garcia-Rosario, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison to be followed by 20 years of supervised released after pleading to attempting to kidnap two minors. He also must register as a sex offender, police said.
Garcia-Rosario was arrested Sept. 29, 2009, after police said he had staked out then-7- and 8-year-old girls at a bus stop for J.V. Washam Elementary School along Torrence Chapel Road in the Bahia Bay neighborhood. Parents called police after they spotted a man for several days near the bus stop. At least once witnesses saw him take photos on his cell phone’s camera, police said.
Police said Garcia-Rosario, with the help of his wife Linda Gonzalez of Edinburg, Texas, planned to hold the girls for a $10,000 ransom.
Police found a several ransom notes, a photo of the children, a loaded semiautomatic pistol with ammunition, duct tape, latex gloves and two Mexican passports when he was arrested, an investigation report said.
Gonzalez is awaiting sentencing.
The Cornelius and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police departments handled the investigation.
