Editor,

I’ve been made aware of a recent article discussing the inconsistent funding mechanisms for the local convention and visitor’s bureau. Visit Lake Norman is a vital partner of ours. There is no question B.A.S.S. could not have held our recent Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open on Lake Norman without its support. All of our Bassmaster events, including the Elite and Open Series, have formal bid processes in which we solicit proposals, award a host and then culminate with a host contract.

That is only the start of the work for the convention and visitors bureaus. Once the contract is final, much of our weekly venues are secured after being negotiated through the expertise of our hosts. They coordinate hotel rooms with discounted group rates for nearly 400 anglers and staff that stay for the week-long event, meeting space, obtain a no-cost weigh-in venue, work with B.A.S.S. Communications/Marketing departments and local media for promotion, create welcome banners and many other hospitality services. All this makes for a great experience for our anglers and staff.

Our relationship with Visit Lake Norman dates back to 2004 when we held the Junior Bassmaster Championship on Lake Norman in conjunction with the Bassmaster Classic. Our success and cooperation with Visit Lake Norman is the primary reason we chose to return in 2006 and this year with the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open Series.

A strong partnership with the local host is critical to the success of B.A.S.S. events. I would certainly label last week’s event on Lake Norman a tremendous success.
