•The National Parent Teacher Association’s Reflections program honored Huntersville Elementary third-grader Sarah Stankiewicz for her Reflections contest entry in the musical composition category. Sarah won first place at the Mecklenburg PTA Council level and third-place at the state level. The Reflections program is designed to enhance arts education by providing students with an opportunity to explore their artistic talents and receive positive recognition for their efforts.



• Five Bailey Middle School band members were selected for the 2011 Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Middle School Honors Band. Katarina Schuette, flute; Marc Augenreich, bassoon; Emily Fread and Jackson Michael, clarinet; and Kevin Thomas, percussion participated in the honors band clinic Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, and gave a concert performance at Piedmont Open IB Middle School on Saturday.



• Terin Patel-Wilson has been named a winner in the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Program, announced National Merit Scholarship Corporation officials. Terin is one of 800 African American high school seniors who have been designated scholarship winners receiving an award of $2,500 each. Terin is a Mooresville resident who has attended Woodlawn for the past nine years.

• Sydney Swain, a North Mecklenburg High School student, recently served as a page for the N.C. House of Representatives. Sydney is the daughter of Dan and Jill Swain of Huntersville and was sponsored by Rep. Ruth Samuelson (R-Mecklenburg). Speaker of the House Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg) appoints the Pages and introduces each one to members at the start of each week during Monday night’s session.



• Chad Gilbert, a University of North Carolina at Charlotte student and Chick-fil-A employee and team leader, received a $1,000 scholarship from the restaurant chain to put toward his education. Employees enrolled in school qualify for the scholarship after accruing a certain number of hours worked in the restaurant. Gilbert received his high school diploma with honors and associate in arts degree while dually enrolled at Central Piedmont Community College and has worked with the restaurant chain’s Northlake Parkway location since 2006.
