Hopewell track star Anthony Bynum has signed a National Letter of Intent with Mississippi State University.

Bynum will be joined at Mississippi State by former Vance standout Jarrett Samuels, who also signed with the Bulldogs after transferring to Charlotte’s Evelyn Mack Academy last fall.

“I had a great connection with the (Mississippi State) coaches,” said Bynum. “The campus blew me away. I really like the facility, the weight room and the new track they had. Jarrett and I will be roommates next year.”

Bynum owns Hopewell school records in the 100-meter dash (10.4 seconds), 200 (21.30) and 300 (33.8), and he’s contributed to the school’s top marks in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Hopewell coach Michelle La Pointe said Bynum is a rare athlete who also could own the 400-meter school record if he puts his mind to it. Bynum proved his worth last weekend at the Taco Bell Track & Field Classic at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C., where he won the 200 by more than 10 meters. Bynum defeated some of the fastest athletes on the East Coast with his time of 21.5.

“I don’t know if he’s a once-in-a-lifetime athlete, but you won’t find many like Anthony,” said La Pointe. “He’s a rare athlete. His times now are consistent with what he ran at the end of last season, so I’m curious to see where he ends up this year."
