HUNTERSVILLE – Presbyterian Hospitals in Huntersville and Charlotte are now able to offer the LAP-BAND weight loss procedure after the Food and Drug Administration recently changed some of the guidelines for who can get the surgery.

The FDA last week said it would allow individuals with a Body Mass Index of 30 to 40, who experience on or more weigh-related health conditions like Type II Diabetes to undergo the procedure. The former policy required the patient to have a Body Mass Index of 35 to 40.

During the procedure surgeons place a band on the top portion of the stomach through a small incision in the abdomen. This restricts the amount of food the stomach wants, making the patient feel fuller while eating less.

Drs. David Voellinger and Donald Balder, both of Southeast Bariatrics, located in Huntersville, are licensed to perform the surgery.
