If you ask recruiting website Rivals.com, first-year program Davidson Day is the fifth-best baseball team at the NC Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 1-A level. The Patriots joined the top five with a 3-0 mark that includes a win over Rivals.com’s top team in 1A baseball and three-time defending state champion Merry Hills’ Lawrence Academy. In that game, the Patriots rallied to a 14-12 victory with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior first baseman Richard Brown hit an opposite field grand slam homerun to give Davidson Day its only lead of the game.
“Certainly we are encouraged that we were able to compete against the three-time defending state champions,” said Davidson Day baseball coach Kevin Bringewatt. “More important than winning the game, I am especially proud that our young team kept its poise and continued to battle after falling so far behind. This game hopefully will be a major step toward our goal of making the state tournament as a first-year program.”
