CONCORD – Cannon School celebrated Pi Day (you know, 3.14) with pie eating contests and the annual student pi recitation contest. Daniel Lee, a junior from Davidson, won after reciting 774 numbers of pi, breaking Cannon’s record of 660 set last year by alumna Lyndsay Cooper.
Physicist Larry Shaw in San Francisco started Pi Day in 1989. March 14 was chosen because the numerical equivalent of the date (3/14) corresponds to the first three digits of pi. The infinitely long number is important in a variety of fields, including engineering, architecture and aerospace.
