Police find stun gun, air pistol in separate incidents at local schools
HUNTERSVILLE – A 13-year-old middle school student at Lake Norman Charter School and an 18-year-old Hopewell High School student were caught last week in unrelated incidents with weapons on school property, Huntersville police said.
Ronald Darnell McKinney was arrested March 2 after police were asked to help Hopewell High officials conduct a search of several students who smelled like they’d been smoking marijuana, police said. During the search, police asked the teen if he was hiding anything. He told them he had an air pellet pistol in his car, police said. Air pellet weapons look very realistic to traditional firearms but shoot small, non-lethal plastic projectiles, a website about the guns said.
Police found the weapon in the driver side of his car, which was parked in the school’s parking lot, police said.
On March 7, police were called to Lake Norman Charter School after a student found a stun gun in the backpack of another student, police said.
The bag’s owner, a 13-year-old seventh grader, had asked the student to go into the bag to look for school supplies.
The student immediately reported the weapon to school officials, who called police. Police did not release the student’s name.
It is unclear what punishment the two students received.
