Twelve students from North Mecklenburg High School’s Debate and Speech Team placed second in the Catholic Forensic League of Charlotte Qualifying tournament on Saturday, March 5, at Phillip O. Berry High School.
The team competed for the privilege of attending the Grand National Championship Tournament being held this year in Washington, DC.
Ten of the 12 students qualified and are eligible to attend nationals.
The “Duo Interpretation” category team of junior Brooke Carter and sophomore James Williams took first place. Senior Brittany Wallace and junior Lauren Calucag placed third in the same event.
Freshman Alex Pope and sophomore Colleen Watson placed first and second respectively in “Oratorical Declamation.” Colleen also took third place in the “Original Oratory,” category.
Senior Cameron Langford and junior Conner Taylor placed second in “Public Forum Debate” competition.
Senior Nicole Celenza and freshman Emily Yue placed fifth and sixth respectively in the “Oral Interpretation” category.
