The Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful board offered free bulbs to all Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools recycling coordinators, and Blythe Elementary recycling coordinator and second grade teacher Erin Garvey took them up on the offer.
The school received more than 760 bulbs from Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful, and Davidson College donated food-waste compost, soil, and manpower to prepare the beds. Second grade teacher Judith Kolbenschlag enlisted the help of her husband, Jeff Kolbenschlag, who works in the horticulture department at the college. He volunteered his time to help prepare beds all over the school’s campus and then helped the students plant the bulbs. All Blythe students had a hand in the planting.
