CORNELIUS – Since a new sign ordinance took effect in Cornelius Jan. 1, the town staff has recorded 136 sign violations. But only four have resulted in citations so far, Planning Director Karen Floyd told town board members Monday, Feb. 7.
The town staff sent warning notices to the 136 sign offenders, who had 10 days to comply with the new rules without a fine.
The town has since sent four citations to businesses that did not comply. Another 24 violations are not yet resolved because the town is waiting for the notices to be returned.
Floyd called the response rate very positive. “Once they got that 10-day warning period, they worked with us,” she said.
The town also has approved all 10 banner permit requests filed since Jan. 1.
