AME Zion Church official charged in Bailey Middle evacuation
CORNELIUS – A minister who serves as director of health and social concerns for the AME Zion Church has been charged with disorderly conduct in connection with a phone call that prompted the evacuation of Bailey Middle School on Feb. 2.
Cornelius police charged the Rev. Bernard Harell Sullivan Jr., 58, of 15411 Tuxford Drive, Huntersville, on Feb. 3 with disorderly conduct by disrupting students. Sullivan could not be reached by phone and did not respond to an e-mail request for comment.
According to a police department news release, Bailey Middle School officials called police about 12:30 p.m. Feb. 2, a Wednesday. Capt. Jeff Ramsey said a person called the school and said officials should get students out of the building. The caller did not specifically refer to a bomb, Ramsey said.
“As a result of that call, the school was placed on lockdown and then evacuated after a suspicious item was located in the gymnasium,” the news release said. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department’s bomb squad responded, and Ramsey said they determined the item was a student’s oddly packaged lunch.
“A secondary search was conducted of the school, and the students returned to class a short time later,” the release said.
Investigators tracked the call to Sullivan’s cell phone, and though Sullivan made no admission, Ramsey said the phone “was in his custody” in the time period in which the call came to the school.
Sullivan’s son, Bernard Sullivan III, is the highly recruited star center of the Davidson Day School basketball team. The son, a senior, has committed to play basketball at Clemson University.
According to the website of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Rev. Sullivan directs the denomination’s Department of Health and Social Concerns at its Charlotte headquarters at 3225 Sugar Creek Road. He has a master of divinity degree and pastoral counseling from Hood Theological Seminary, in Salisbury, and a Ph.D. in clinical community psychology, according to the website.
Police respond to disturbance at commissioner’s home
HUNTERSVILLE – Huntersville police responded to the home of town Commissioner Ken Lucas twice on Feb. 2, according to police logs.
Lucas and his wife, Angela Deanna Lucas, were “having a dispute over the husband changing the locks on the house,” at 15620 Glen Miro Drive, according to the police department’s Watch Commander Log. “The wife was eventually let in by the husband.”
According to Police Capt. Michael Kee, officers responded to the home again after Ken Lucas and Angela Lucas accused each other of assault. The officers did not witness an assault and advised each person that they could take out warrants with a magistrate. Kee said Huntersville police have not been asked to serve a warrant against either person.
Ken Lucas currently faces a charge of assaulting his wife on Jan. 16. A hearing is scheduled for March 15 in criminal court, although in a separate civil proceeding, a judge refused to grant Angela Lucas’ request for a restraining order against her husband.
