Davidson College announced five inductees into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame – Mary Shell Brosche Zaffino (Class of 2000, swimming and diving), Ryan Crawford (2001, football), Jeff Frank (1966, men’s tennis coach), Philip Koonce (1956, men’s track) and Alan Lewis (1988, baseball).
The induction ceremonies will be Feb. 4, beginning with a ceremony at halftime of the men’s 4 p.m. basketball game against Chattanooga.
There will be a reception after the game at 6:30 p.m. in the Lilly Family Gallery in the Chambers Building. A dinner and program will follow the reception at 7:15 p.m.
Davidson Day boys are on a roll
The Davidson Day boys basketball team has used smothering defense to win 11 of its first 12 games. The Patriots, who outscore opponents by an average margin of 68-44, are 2-0 in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association.
Point guard Rashun Davis averages team-highs in points (13.8), assists (4.8) and steals (3.4). Forward Phillip Anglade, recovered from last season’s knee injury, is averaging 13.3 points and a team-best 11.4 rebounds.
Andrew Howard and Richard Brown are averaging 4.3 rebounds apiece for Davidson Day, which outrebounds foes by a 38-22 margin.
Lake Norman Charter’s Williams rests knee
Point guard Jamie Williams, the leading scorer for Lake Norman Charter’s girls basketball team, missed the Dec. 16 game with a sore knee. But the Knights didn’t miss a beat and crushed East Lincoln, 41-15, in a Southern Piedmont 1A/2A conference game.
Coach Bobby Williams said Jamie Williams was favoring the knee during practice on Thursday, and he intended not to player her Friday unless she felt good after warm-ups.
Alex Busch scored 12 and Ezzine Mbamalu added 10 points for the Knights, who improved to 5-1.
Hough wrestlers crush Vance in match
Hough High’s wrestling team beat Vance, 78-6, in a match Dec. 14. Ten Huskies won by pinning their opponents – Martin Markee (106-pound division), Steven Owens (120), Adam Nivens (126), Tanner Russ (132), Austin Newell (152), Palmer Maples (160), Charles Smith (170), Christian York (195), Jordan Taylor (220) and Connor Brooks (285).
Hough soccer star commits to college
Hough High senior midfielder Santiago Patino, who was all-I-MECK 4A conference, all-Region 10 and all-state this season, has committed to UNC Wilmington. He’ll join Hough teammate Nathaniel Goodwin, who also committed to play there.
Patino had 11 goals and 11 assists this season, helping the Huskies win the conference with a 13-0-1 record. Hough won a school-record 19 games.
Spring lacrosse leagues and free clinics
Registration is open for the Cornelius PARC Department’s spring lacrosse season, which will be in partnership with Xtreme Lacrosse.
Players can register and find additional information at www.xlacrosse.com. If you register by Jan. 1, your name will be printed on the back of your jersey. The spring season will begin in mid-February.
Also, Xtreme Lacrosse will hold a free boys lacrosse clinic on Dec. 28 at Smithville Park. Boys ages 10 and under will be instructed from 10-11 a.m., and boys 11 and older from 11 a.m. to noon. Xtreme Lacrosse will be accepting donations for its Assist the Goal scholarship fund.
Xtreme Lacrosse will hold four free clinics for beginning lacrosse players – both boys and girls – on Jan. 21, Jan. 28, Feb. 4 and Feb. 11 from 11 a.m.-noon at Smithville Park.
