Fundraiser for local former basketball star raises thousands for family
by Alan Hodge
When former Davidson College basketball player David Burns died a few weeks ago from a heart attack at age 34, he left behind his wife Amada, and sons 5-year-old Isaac, 3-year-old Aaron, and 10-month-old J.J.
Responding to the tragedy, hundreds of people from around the area gathered Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Kids Emporium consignment store, 18724 Statesville Road, and opened both their hearts and purses to help the Burns family through their ordeal with a benefit auction and bake sale.
The event raised nearly $5,500 that will go to Amanda and the children.
Kids Emporium owner Barrie Tabor and volunteer Ellen Wilamowski came up with the idea of a benefit event after hearing of the Burns family tragedy.
“I knew Amanda from her being a customer of ours,” Tabor said. “The benefit seemed like a good way to show our support.”
Amanda Burns was on hand at the auction with her children.
“It’s amazing to see how everyone in the community is thinking of us,” she said. “I have no idea where I would be without their help.”
Burns family friend Michael Anderson is an attorney and has set up a trust fund called the David Burns Memorial Family Trust. He attended Davidson College with both David and Amanda.
“I was a reporter with the school newspaper when David was on the team and Amanda was a cheerleader,” Anderson said. “I’ve known them for 13 years and wanted to make sure there was a way to give to Amanda and the children.”
Anderson was on hand at the benefit event and marveled at the turnout.
“It’s phenomenal,” he said. “It’s great to see the community honor David’s memory.”
In addition to the money that was raised from auctioning items that included high-end baby strollers, bicycles, and toys, several local businesses also pitched in with gift cards and goods. A D.J. from Little Dreamer Productions was on hand at the event.
All money from Kids Emporium store sales on the day of the benefit also went to the Burns family.
