SouthLake Christian wins cross country title


SouthLake Christian’s girls cross country team won the Metrolina Athletic Conference championship for the third time in four years, beating Westminster Catawba, 54-58, on Oct. 17.

SouthLake’s Anna Landis (fifth) and Ansley Rikard (eighth) earned all-conference honors with top-10 finishes. It was Landis’ fourth all-conference honor. Only five girls have accomplished that feat in the meet’s 12-year history, and Landis is the first from SouthLake.

SouthLake sophomore Joe Bryant finished third in the boys race to earn all-conference for the second consecutive year.

HITMEN win local tournament

The Lake Norman 11-and-under HITMEN, a new elite baseball team, won the Nation’s Baseball All-American Championship Series by sweeping four games last weekend. The victory moved the HITMEN into the No. 1 spot among the state’s Nation’s Baseball Elite teams.

Bennett makes Hough softball history

Hough High’s Gaylin Bennett recently committed to Queens University of Charlotte, and became the first Huskies softball player to commit to a college.

Bennett, a senior catcher, will sign her National Letter of Intent on Nov. 9 at Hough.

Charter in volleyball title match

Lake Norman Charter’s unbeaten volleyball team (22-0) swept its first two matches in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A tournament and advanced to the final, which was scheduled for Oct. 19 against North Lincoln.

The Knights beat Gastonia Highland Tech (25-4, 25-11, 25-6) on Oct. 17 and then defeated East Lincoln (25-15, 25-12, 25-10) in the Oct. 18 semifinal.

Hough soccer team is on a roll

Hough High’s soccer team reached a season-high in goals during an 8-2 victory against West Charlotte on Oct. 18.

Michael Basnett scored three goals, and Nathaniel Goodwin, Daniel Nielsen, Andres Duarte, Kevin Husselbee and James Jackson scored one apiece.

Hough won its fifth consecutive game and improved to 15-1-2 overall and 10-0-1 in I-MECK 4A conference play. The Huskies have a half-game lead over Lake Norman in the conference, and the teams will play Monday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Hough.

Davidson Day soccer reaches final

The Davidson Day boys soccer team lost to Gaston Day, 1-0, in the final of the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association tournament on Oct. 17.

The Patriots, No. 7 in the state private-school 2A poll, slipped to 13-3-2. Two of the losses have been to Gaston Day.

Davidson Day had won its three previous games last week: 5-0 against Statesville Christian, 8-0 against Victory Christian and 3-1 against Hickory Christian. Freshman C.J. Bradley had eight goals and three assists on the week, bumping his season total to 25 goals. Seniors Jackson Goyette and Erik Robinson scored two goals each, and junior Austin McCarty was in net for two shutouts.

SouthLake volleyball still unbeaten

SouthLake Christian’s volleyball team improved to 22-0 with a sweep against Northside Christian (25-9, 25-6, 25-6) on Oct. 17.

Katie Schoenrock led the Eagles with 12 kills and six aces, and Kayla Summer had 11 kills. Olivia Loeffler had five aces and seven digs, setter Dakoda Hawkins added 34 assists, and Katie McGuire had eight kills.

Lake Norman Charter one stroke short

The Lake Norman Charter girls golf team finished second in a six-team Southern Piedmont 1A/2A conference match at Lincoln Country Club on Oct. 17. The Knights scored 296 in the 18-hole match, one stroke behind winner East Lincoln.

Junior Maegan Ports (88) led Lake Norman Charter, second only to East Lincoln’s Brittany Smith (83).
