Barnette Elementary School fifth-grader Nicole Long, together with the Barnette student council members, collected about 1,800 toiletry items last month to donate to A Child’s Place, a Charlotte organization serving homeless children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Nicole and her mother, Michele, of Huntersville, dropped off the supplies last week.

Student council leader and teacher Laura Hicks worked with the Barnette students to identify six most-needed toiletry items, and then assigned each grade level an item. The council also received a donation of 200 toothbrushes from Dr. Sharon Holley at Dentistry 4 Kids in Huntersville.
