On Nov. 7, the SouthLake Eagles swim team hosted the SouthLake Invitational at Huntersville Family Fitness Aquatics and came away the winner in the overall team competition. The Eagles accumulated 490 points, 82 more than second place Spartanburg (S.C.) Christian (408). Covenant Day, a 3A NCISAA state champion two seasons ago and runner-up last season, came in third with 400 points, followed by Shannon Forest (S.C.) Christian (388), Hickory Grove Christian (329), Gaston Christian (213) and Gaston Day (22).

“With seven teams and more than 200 swimmers, the meet had a state championship feel to it,” said SouthLake swim coach Gary Anderson. “It was great to bring in teams that normally don’t get a chance to compete in an event with this kind of facility. There were a lot of good swimmers and some very fast times.”

The SouthLake girls defeated all six teams to improve to 5-0 this season. The Eagles’ Taylor Harkey, Taylor Wilson, Moriah Anderson and Brittany Bisese combined to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2 minutes, 7.54 seconds and came in second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Individually, Wilson took first in the 100 breaststroke. She has yet to lose a breaststroke event this season. Wilson also came in third in the 200 individual medley, while Anderson was third in the 100 fly and fifth in the 100 breaststroke. Harkey, an eighth-grader, finished second in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 100 backstroke. Bisese was fourth in the 100 freestyle.

On the boys side, SouthLake missed first place by just two points. The Eagles’ Matt Belter, Austin Meletiou, John Baker and Scott Ryan finished second in the 200 freestyle and medley relays. Baker won the 500 freestyle event and was second in the 100 butterfly. Belter took the bronze in the 200 IM and silver in the backstroke. Scott was fifth in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Meletiou finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
