Police suspect arson in Blythe Elementary School fire
HUNTERSVILLE – Huntersville police are investigating a suspicious fire set at Blythe Elementary last week that caused a good deal of smoke damage to a storage area and the school’s cafeteria, officials said.
Police and Huntersville firefighters were called to the 12202 Hambright Road school at about 10:30 p.m. Nov. 25 after fire alarms were set off. Firefighters found a storage cabinet on fire in a room off of the school’s cafeteria. They found a lighted candle inside the cabinet as the cause of the fire.
Firefighters were quick to extinguish the blaze that caused little fire damage but “significant” smoke damage to the storage room and cafeteria, Huntersville Police Captain Michael Kee said.
Police originally believed the incident was accidental but now think the fire was intentionally set after interviewing several people at the school.
Anyone with information in the fire should call the Huntersville Police Department at 704-875-6542.
