This week’s bulletins from north Mecklenburg-area police and fire departments

Heads up police work nabs three

HUNTERSVILLE – Three men were arrested Dec. 9 because police followed their instincts after noticing a suspicious car.

Two Huntersville police detectives were curious after they noticed a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe parked outside of a construction site on Wilmington Street. At the site, police found three men using bolt cutters to cut the lock off of a storage unit, police said. The men later told police they were trying to steal copper wiring, police said.

Police arrested Benito Hernandez Reyes, Roberto Santiago Hernandez and Francisco Flores Hernandez. Each was charged with felony attempted breaking and entering, felony conspiracy and felony possession of burglary tools, the Mecklenburg County jail log said.

Each was being held on a $5,000 bond and had been placed on an Immigrant and Customs Enforcement hold, the jail log said.

Those holds are used when an inmate’s residency status is under investigation.

Police: Driver tried to run man over to avoid bill

HUNTERSVILLE – A 78-year-old man is being investigated for trying to run over an auto mechanic over an unpaid bill, a police report said.

The man went to Huntersville Ford on Dec. 2 to pick up his Lincoln Navigator. He tried to pay for the $589 bill twice with checks but both were declined, the report said. When the 21-year-old clerk went to get his manager, the man grabbed the keys from the clerk’s hands and ran to his car, the report said.

The man hit the clerk with his car as he fled out of the parking lot, the report said.

Police are still investigating and no charges have been filed so far, police said.
