Doris Maxwell
HUNTERSVILLE – Doris Jane Moore Maxwell, 83, formerly of Huntersville, died Dec. 4, 2010, at her home at The Pines at Davidson.
Born June 23, 1927, in Huntersville, Mrs. Maxwell was a daughter of the late Thomas Frank and Jane Christenbury Moore.
She grew up on the family farm on Eastfield Road and graduated from Croft Elementary School, Huntersville High School, and Queens College. She taught English, American literature and journalism at Stony Point and North Mecklenburg High School, where a generation of students knew her as Mama Maxwell. She also served as an elder of Huntersville Presbyterian Church and was active in Alpha Sigma chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta teachers’ sorority.
Her husband, Charles Kimble Maxwell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include Tom, Tessa and Ian Maxwell, of Charlotte; Catherine Maxwell and Ben Fewel, of Raleigh; John, Sandra, Oliver and Edison Maxwell, of Charlotte; and Gail, Margaret, Dan and David Moore and their children, of Charlotte and Huntersville.

Warren Morton
DAVIDSON – Warren George “Toodle” Morton, 78, of Davidson, died Dec. 4, 2010, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville.
Born Aug. 3, 1932, in Oakboro, Mr. Morton was a son of the late George and Rosa Morton.
He served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked 32 years from Davey Tree Co., retiring in July 1994. He was a member of Community Baptist Church in Mount Mourne.
A funeral service was held Dec. 9 at Community Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. J.E. Speece and Dick Clark, with burial at Mimosa Cemetery. Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, was in charge.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Betty Anderson Morton; sons Dewayne and Donnie Morton, of Albemarle; daughters Sherrie Burgess and Kim Morton, of Albemarle; stepsons, Ricky, Gary and Doug Anderson, of Davidson; stepdaughters Vickie Howard and husband, Jeff, Janet Anderson and Amy Alexander, all of Davidson; brother, Hob Martin, of Oakboro; sister, Carrie Lee Gilbert, of Oakboro; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

William Lackey
CORNELIUS – William C. Lackey Jr., 65, of Cornelius, died suddenly Dec. 7, 2010. Born May 17, 1945, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Lackey was a son of the late William C. and Thelma Devinny Watts.
A 1963 graduate of Belmont High School, he served as an electronics technician in the U.S. Air Force, earning an honorable discharge in 1971. Bill began working in real estate in 1983 and later served as president of the Charlotte Regional Realtors Association, chairman of the Real Estate and Building Coalition and director of the N.C. Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. In 2000, he was named Realtor of the Year.
He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the Don Bridger Sunday School Class, led the Disciple Class for years, chaired the finance committee and served on other boards and committees. He also served on the Town of Cornelius Planning Board.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Broadway Lackey; daughter, Kaye Lackey; stepsons Gregory Broadway and wife, Hilary, and Kevin Broadway and wife, Cindy; brother, Mark Lackey; sisters Berry Deason and June Barker; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Dec. 10 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Mike Bailey, Tim Reimer and Jill Smith. Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, was in charge.

Mary McMahan
HUNTERSVILLE – Mary Pauline Smith McMahan, 93, of Huntersville, died Dec. 8, 2010.
Born Nov. 1, 1917, in Columbus, Ind., Mrs. McMahan was the daughter of the late Marshall and Lula Gellinger Smith. She married Clyde McMahan on July 10, 1937.
She was an accomplished organist and pianist and enjoyed teaching both. While living in Florida, she served as organist for the Passion Play during the winter and in Spearfish, S.D. in the summer.
Her husband and a grandson preceded her in death.
Survivors include children Ann Gossman and husband, David, of Huntersville, Merrill McMahan and wife, Madonna, Wausau, Wis., and Dennis McMahan and wife, Jan, of Knightstown, Ind.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held later at Garland Brook, Columbus, Ind. Raymer Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Nell Jenkins
HUNTERSVILLE – Nell Bradford Jenkins, 85, died Dec. 11, 2011.
Born July 13, 1925, in rural Mecklenburg County east of Davidson, Mrs. Jenkins was a daughter of the late Robert Caldwell and Mamie Alspaugh Bradford.
A graduate of the Womens College in Greensboro, she wrote “They Would Call It Ramah Grove – A History of Ramah Presbyterian Church” and was former president of the Davidson Garden Club, a member of the Eighteen Book Club and executive secretary at General Time before she retired.
Her husband, Lawson Fay Jenkins Jr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Lawson Fay Jenkins III and wife, Martha; daughter, Lynn Jenkins Herring, and husband, Don; brother, Robert Caldwell Bradford; and three grandsons.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Ramah Presbyterian Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Raymer Funeral Home was in charge.

Ora Bumgarner
CHARLOTTE – Ora Lee Chapman Bumgarner, 91, of Charlotte, died Dec. 6, 2010.
Born Aug. 23, 1919, in Alexander County, Mrs. Bumgarner was a daughter of the late Butler and Effie Brookshire Chapman.
She was a member of Statesville Road Baptist Church, where she and her late husband, Horace, taught the 1-year-old nursery for 22 years.
Besides her husband, a grandson also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters Barbara Cochrane, Charlotte, Joyce Wilson, Denver, N.C., Linda Teague, Harrisburg, and Marsha McMurray and husband, Marshall, Charlotte; brothers David Lynn Chapman, Charlotte, and Eugene Chapman, Stoney Point; sister, Jewel Benton, Clemmons; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 13, at Statesville Road Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. David and Brian Teague, with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery West. Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, was in charge.

Betty Tomczak
CHARLOTTE – Betty Tomczak, 84, of Charlotte, died Dec. 7, 2010.
Mrs. Tomczak was the daughter of the late Charlie and Marie Braswell. Her husband, Leonard, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her sister, Martha Braswell Pearson, and four nieces.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, is assisting the family.
Vickie McPherson
DENVER – Vickie Bostian McPherson, 57, of Denver, N,C., died Dec. 9, 2010, after an 11-year battle with cancer.
Born May 17, 1953 in Cabarrus County, Mrs. McPherson was a daughter of the late Clyde E. Bostian and Thelma Lentz Bostian.
A native of China Grove, she was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, China Grove, and graduated from South Rowan High School and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She worked at Belk’s for Lancome Cosmetics and later as a substitute teacher at Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville and East Lincoln High School in Denver.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard; daughter, Amanda, New York, N.Y.; and brother, Eddie Bostian, China Grove.
A funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 13, at Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, with burial at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, China Grove.

Wallace “Wally” Allen Yarbrough
DENVER – Wallace “Wally” Allen Yarbrough, of Denver, N.C., died Dec. 11, 2010.
Born Dec. 1, 1924, in York County, S.C. Mr. Yarbrough was a son of the late John Franklin and Maude Johnston Yarbrough.
He worked in sales and later as a Realtor in Charlotte for more than 30 years.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Salem United Methodist Church. Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, was in charge.
Survivors include by his wife of 53 years, Barbara S. Yarbrough; son, Jeffrey Allen Yarbrough, and wife, Susan; daughter, Karen Leslie Yarbrough; brothers John W. Yarbrough and Erwin K. Yarbrough; and two grandchildren.
