About 100 north Mecklenburg teens took part last week in an overnight, overhaul project for the Ada Jenkins Center’s Loaves and Fishes Pantry.

The teens, and several volunteers from local churches, spent the night on air mattresses and worked all day to install an 8-by-8-foot walk-in freezer and a 6-by-8-foot walk-in cooler and to move the entire pantry to a larger room.

Local churches, of all denominations, pitched in to provide meals for the volunteers. The ‘Build Teams’ included one adult and five teens, with specific written instructions for each team.

The Ada Jenkins Loaves and Fishes Pantry is the largest such facility in Mecklenburg County, but has been in need of a larger space to meet the growing needs of the community. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsored the community effort to raise money to purchase the walk-in freezer and the walk-in cooler.
