Eighty middle- and high-school girls in the Charlotte area get a college campus tour thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation to the Girl Talk Foundation.

Girls from 11 to 16 years old interested in attending the college tour are required to register online at www.girltalkfoundationinc.com. Admission is free. Transportation and food are provided. Space is limited to 80 girls.

Participants will visit Johnson C. Smith University on Oct. 16 for a full day of learning. The day will include a tour led by student ambassadors from Johnson C. Smith University, and an informational session on the application and financial aid process. New York Times best-selling author, actor and motivational speaker Hill Harper will also share lessons about self-image, respect and the importance of education.

Since 2007, Girl Talk has taken more than 150 girls on tours of campuses including Duke University, North Carolina Central University, Winston-Salem State University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Davidson College. After the college tour, 73 percent of the girls plan to attend college, and all have been interested in visiting other colleges.
