DAVIDSON – Here is a list of upcoming events hosted by Davidson College:
• Art history lecture, Wednesday, Oct. 13: Michael Leja, art history professor at the University of Pennsylvania, will give a 7:30 p.m. free lecture on Morgan Russell and the Avant-Garde in Paris. The lecture will be held at the Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center. For more information call 704-894-2695.
• Wafaa Bilal art discussion, Oct. 14: Iraqi American artist Wafaa Bilal will speak at 7 p.m. during a free reception about his exhibition “Three Bodies,” which will open at the Van Every Gallery. The speech will be held at the Belk Visual Arts Center.
Bilal’s exhibition will present documentary photographs, videos and recreations of his performance-based installations in which he uses his own body, both literally and virtually, to highlight the contentious relationship between American and Middle Eastern cultures.
An exhibit of mixed media works entitled “Casual Language: a Mixed Emoticon,” by New York-based artist Darren Goins that were specifically commissioned for this exhibition at Davidson College is opening in the Smith Gallery. Both exhibitions will be on display through Dec. 8. There is no admission charge to visit the galleries, which are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. For information call 704-894-2519.
•Liederabend Concert, Oct. 17: Jacquelyn Culpepper and Diane Thornton will hold at free “liederabend” concert. The free vocal show will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Tyler-Tallman Hall of Sloan Music center. For information call 704-894-2848.
