CORNELIUS – SouthLake Christian Academy senior Chris Henry founded Clubs for Kids, an initiative providing golf clubs for children who can’t afford them.

A golfer for more than five years, Chris said golf is different from many of the other sports kids play.

“It really teaches you honesty and integrity,” Chris said. Unlike a lot of other sports, he said, golf is more solitary and golfers have more opportunity to cheat or pad their scores.  “You have to be honest to yourself, even when nobody else is watching,” he said.

A graduate of the First Tee program, a World Golf Federation initiative providing children with the opportunity for character development through golf, Chris has also spent time teaching golf. While teaching, he came across a lot of children that couldn’t afford clubs. Knowing that his family had some old clubs in their garage, Chris got the idea to seek donations of golf clubs, bags and balls to benefit the First Tee of Lake Norman program at the Mooresville Golf Club. Last week he delivered 101 clubs – including several full sets – to the First Tee program.

“It’s very rewarding to know I am helping kids to play a sport I love so much,” Chris said.
