Co-owners, ex-Californians met on Lake Norman

MOORESVILLE – Swell Board Shop, a unique store for surf and paddleboard enthusiasts, is open for business.

Owned by Jason Bowles and Chad Arrit, the two ex-Californians met on Lake Norman. With a mutual interest in surfing and other board sports, the two decided to invest in a store that offers everything from paddleboards to high-end sunglasses.

The store specializes in surfboards, waveboards and skateboards.

Surfing on Lake Norman, a seemingly impossible feat, is done with boats that have a built-in wave action. The boat creates waves and surfers are able to go behind and catch those waves. It’s a sport that has grown a lot in the last three years.

Bowles, who grew up with ocean sports in Southern California said there’s nothing like Swell Board Shop in the area. Customers can buy a surfboard, wakeboard or any clothing needed for water sports.

He and his friend, Arrit, talked about the concepts for two years before opening the store. A year ago when the two entrepreneurs saw the apartments at LangTree fill up with renters, they knew they’d found their spot.

Paddleboarding is the most popular sport with customers. The store rents paddleboards that can be transported right down to the lake at LangTree. With this new store open, surfers won’t have far to go for equipment for their water sports fixes.
